Smaller and sleeker than the previous model, the 3rd-gen Charger was more contoured, with an exaggerated “Coke-bottle shape.” Dodge also brought back the split-grille design but updated it by wrapping the bumper around the entire front of the grille for a dramatic new look. Chrysler also offered an optional HEMI engine for the only time in the Charger’s third generation. During the 1971 model year, only 63 cars were equipped with HEMI engines out of a total production of 2,659.
